Mrs. Willie Pearl Kelker Porter, R.N., B.S., M.S

Mrs. Porter, born on October 5,1911, passed away in a local hospital in Miami, FL, on Wednesday, March 15,2017.

She was the third of seven children born to Willie and Pearl Kelker. Her primary education was received in Milton, FL. She completed her high school education at Washington High School in Pensacola, FL, in 1933. She attended Freedman's Hospital School of Nursing in Washington, D.C. She became a Registered Nurse in 1935 and a Public Health Nurse in 1937. She was appointed Supervisor of Nurses at the Florida A&M College Hospital in Tallahassee, FL. She was the Health Instructor, School Nurse and worked in several other capacities for the College's Lucy Moton High School for 28 years. She earned her B.S. degree in Sociology from Florida A&M University and her Masters degree in Medical and Surgical Nursing at Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana.

In 1939, Miss Willie Pearl married Dr. Gilbert Lawrence Porter. To this union Laurestine and Albert Wesley were born.

She and her family moved to Miami, FL, in 1965, where she became a member of the Nursing Staff at Christian Hospital. She later joined the Mount Sinai Hospital as the first Afro-American instructor in the School of Practical Nursing. After the closing of the Nursing School at Mount Sinai, she taught at Miami Jackson High School and Miami Senior High School. She retired in 1973.

She was very active as a member of the National Black Nurses Association, FAMU Alumni Association, Freedman's Hospital School of Nursing Alumni, Family Christian Association of America's Maturity Club, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Episcopal Church of the Incarnation, Saint Ann-Margaret Episcopal Church Women's Association, Delta Kappa Omega Grad Chapter Tallahassee, FL and the . During her lifetime she received numerous accolades and awards for her careers and services. On her 90th birthday she established the Willie Pearl Porter Nursing Scholarship Fund for deserving students seeking a degree in Nursing.

She leaves to cherish her memories two loving and devoted children, Laurestine Porter and Albert Porter (Yuenes) both of Miami, FL; one sister, Audrey O. K. Davis of Tallahassee, FL; grandchildren, Crystal Porter-Bazemore (Tawan), Braylon Pope; cousins, Louise and HaroldKelker; a host of nieces, nephews and devoted friends.

Funeral services will be held at Noon on Tuesday, April 4, 2017,at Isaiah Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church in Milton, FL, with Presiding Elder Anthony R. Scott, officiating. Interment will follow at Milton Keyser Cemetery. Trahan Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
